Polio is a infectious viral disease that affects the central nervous system. It can cause temporary or permanent paralysis. It is a very contagious disease that is created by a virus. Kids aged 5 or younger have a more likely chance of getting affected by Polio than any other ages. Studies have shown that 1 in 200 infections will end with permanent paralysis. Polio can enter your body through your mouth and nose.
What Causes Poliomyelitis?
Transmitted from person-to-person, poliovirus is created from fecal matter (body waste). It happens when there is restricted access to running water and flushing of toilets, it can pollute the drinking water. It could also contaminate the water if there is waste from humans containing this disease. Infected food, water, and direct contact from a polio patient can spread the virus. People who are either pregnant, have a declined immune system (HIV+), a young child or more, are more likely to catch Poliomyelitis.
