Sub-Clinical
Polio infections are 95% sub-clinical.These symptoms may not affect the patient, nor will it affect the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). The patient will not become paralyzed.
Symptoms
Symptoms usually last around 72 hours or less.
Symptoms include:
-Headache
-Sore, red throat
-Small fever
-Vomiting
-Discomfort

Non-Paralytic
This type of Polio affects the central nervous system. It shows moderate symptoms, but does not lead to becoming paralyzed.
Symptoms
Symptoms last for a handful of days to 1-2 weeks.
Symptoms include:
-Fever
-Sore throat and upper respiratory infection
-Headache
-Vomiting
-Weariness
-Irregular reflexes
-Issues with swallowing and maybe breathing
-Pain and feeling stiff in the back and neck area
-Pain or feeling stiff in the arms and legs

Paralytic
Paralytic is the most serious case of Polio and it is very rare. It can cause partial to full paralysis. It is very rare for a full paralysis to evolve. 1% of all Polio infections has fully paralyzed patients. 5-10% of patients that are fully paralyzed die from attacks of muscles that manages breathing. There are three types of Paralytic Polio:
Spinal Polio which affects the spine
Bulbar Polio which affects the brain stem
Bulbospinal Polio which affects both the spine and the brain stem
Spinal Polio which affects the spine
Bulbar Polio which affects the brain stem
Bulbospinal Polio which affects both the spine and the brain stem
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
-Symptoms from Non-Paralytic
-Destruction of reflexes
-Very bad spasms and pain in muscles
-Limp and slacked limbs (that is occasionally on one side of the body because of the weak involvement of the spine)
-Abrupt paralysis (either temporary or permanent)
-Disfigured limbs (mostly the hips, ankles, and feet because of the lengthened weakness and the absence of proper orthopedic bracing)

Post-Polio Syndrome
Someone who has caught the disease or someone who has previously caught the disease and recovered from it, and then gets it again is called Post-Polio Syndrome. Even if you recovered from it 35 years ago, you can still get reinfected.

-Pain in muscles worsen
-Getting tired and weary easily
-Muscle wasting/muscle atrophy (having difficulty moving limbs)
-Breathing and/or swallowing issues
-Breathing while sleeping issues (sleep apnea)
